Starbucks: A New Twist on Affinity Credit Cards
For years it has seemed that all affinity cards were
alike -- a nonprofit would receive a few bucks when its
members signed up for a card and perhaps 1% of their
charges.
Leave it to Starbucks to come up with something new
in the world of plastic.
Starbucks Duetto Visa is a credit card, a reloadable
Starbucks card AND a generator of donations. A $5
donation will be made to The Starbucks Foundation
whenever a Duetto cardmember makes their first Visa
purchase.
The first beneficiary of those contributions is
Jumpstart, a preschool mentoring organization with
deep ties to Starbucks. It estimates that each $5 contribution funds an hour of preschool tutoring.
To sweeten the pot, card
issuer Bank One donated $100,000 to Jumpstart upon
the card's launch.
Unlike most affinity cards which depend on the strength
of a nonprofit's supporter base to attract consumers,
this card leads with coffee rewards: $10 on first use
and 1% of ongoing Visa purchases in the form of
Starbucks credits.
"There is no better way for Starbucks enthusiasts to be
rewarded for what they do everyday," said Howard
Schultz, Starbucks' chairman. "The Duetto card
extends the Starbucks experience by rewarding
customers while giving back to our communities."
