eBay Giving Works
Since its inception, eBay has hosted a number of cause marketing / fundraising events. Since 2000, more than $74M has been raised for charity from listings sold on eBay worldwide.
To better serve the charitable inclinations of the eBay Community and the fundraising needs of the nonprofit sector, eBay launched a dedicated program for charity listings in November 2003.
eBay Giving Works is powered by MissionFish, a service of the Points of Light Foundation which is a 501(c)(3). Their valuable support includes managing the nonprofit directory for eBay Giving Works, verifying that organizations are eligible for this program, collecting and disbursing sellers' donations, providing sellers with tax receipts, and tracking donations online.
eBay Giving Works listings stand out in the eBay Marketplace with a distinctive charity ribbon icon, display donation information prominently within the item description, and benefit from additional visibility through specialized search functionality and free promotion on the eBay site – subsequently, these listings tend to sell more often and at higher prices.
eBay Giving Works supports two types of compassionate commerce:
- Direct Selling - a nonprofit lists an item directly on eBay to raise funds
- Community Selling - an eBay Seller lists an item and commits to donate 10-100% of the final sale price (with a $10 minimum donation required if the item sells) to a nonprofit in the program (there are now more than 8,000 certified and participating organizations to choose from)
Well known organizations such as the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity International, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Starlight Starbright, Communities in Schools, Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation, and many many more fundraise on eBay.
In an effort to further support the Community’s generosity, eBay instituted a fee donation policy for eBay Giving Works listings: When a seller elects to donate at least 90% of an eBay Giving Works listing's final sale price to a certified nonprofit in the program and the item sells, eBay will collect the Insertion and Final Value Fees paid by the seller and donate them to the organization designated within the listing, up to a total of $2 million per year. (http://givingworks.ebay.com/feedonation) As a result of this policy, to-date eBay has contributed more than $600,000 in basic selling fees to a number of worthy causes.
A few examples of items that have raised substantial money for charity on eBay:
- Celebrity-signed Harley-Davidson from Jay Leno in 2005 – sold for $800,100 (funds benefited Red Cross Tsunami Relief effort)
- Lunch with Warren Buffett in 2006 – sold for $620,100 (funds benefited The Glide Foundation)
- Golf Foursome with Tiger Woods in 2001 – sold for $425,000 (funds benefited Tiger Woods Foundation)
The eBay Community displays tremendous compassion in times of need and generates significant funds from eBay Giving Works listings to support relevant disaster relief organizations. In the first six months following the Gulf Coast Hurricanes in 2005, approximately $2.8M was raised – and contributions continue to be processed today!
